Description
This project was the design for my final undergraduate architectural thesis. The Village of Daboya located in Northern Ghana lies adjacent to the Tamale river and is well known for its production of a revered woven cloth Native to the Northern Region called Fugu. Annually the village is plagued by heavy rains and flooding which become more sever due to deforestation and climate change. As Daboya is only accessible by boat from the northern capital Tamale, when flooding occurs it is near impossible for aid workers to reach the residents.
My proposed adaptable Emergency structures, made of local materials would be a mainstay in the village year round. During the dry season they would provide pavilions for the weavers in the village and areas for food storage and potted gardens. During the rainy season the daily activities of the residents would be elevated so that they could continue live to until flood waters subside. Space for rain water collection was allocated so that the emergency shelters would be self sufficient.
The aesthetic of the mobile partitions and exterior walls are indicative of the woven pattern found in Northern Fugu textiles. The outcome is a both a environmental and culturally sustainable space that will service the village of Daboya.
